Who is eligible to participate in the J-1 Intern-Trainee program?
The program is open to any young leader who is ready to live independently in the United States for 6 to 12 months. He/she must be eager to hone his/her professional skills, work and connect with fellow participants and Americans. He/she must be willing to be a citizen ambassador of his/her country.
The participant for must be over 18 years old and demonstrate a level English language proficiency that is sufficient to train in an English-speaking work environment. He/she must have sufficient funding to cover the placement and processing costs, as well as the travel and living expenses abroad. He/she must understand the purpose of the program and that he/she cannot extend beyond the program duration and/or change his/her visa status.
Importantly, the participant must qualify in any of the program categories.
What are the J-1 Intern-Trainee program categories?
Intern Program Category
Currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a degree of certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution; or
Graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to the start date of the internship program.
Trainee Program Category
Holds a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution, and has at least one year of prior related work experience in their occupational field acquired outside the United States; or
Has five (5) years of work experience outside the United States in their occupational field.
