Are you flying to the United States for the Exchange Visitor Program? If so, here is the housing listings guide for J-1 Interns and Trainees going to the US.

Use trusted and well-known websites for house listings.

House listings, to put it simply, are lists of properties that are for rent or sale found through online and offline advertisements. These listings can help you find your housing or a place to stay in the US.

To avoid fraudulent schemes, browse house listings on trusted and well-known websites. There have been cases of false advertising and unmet expectations when it comes to online house listings, so you need to be extra careful.

Some of these trusted websites include Apartments.com, Uptownrents.com, RentToOwnLabs.com, Zillow.com, and HotPads.com

However, even if these websites are reliable, we recommend that any payment be made face-to-face or offline to ensure proper and correct transactions.

Consider your location.

When looking for a place, make sure that you take note of its location. Whether you want it near malls, entertainment places, or even your assigned hotel, these should always come into play when deciding on a place.

Forewarning, however, housing near hotels might be pricier. It really depends on the location and nearby establishments.

Housing Listings Guide For J-1 Interns And Trainees - Consider your location

Consider your transportation.

Along with the location, also take note of your transportation. Find house listings nearby bus stops, taxi stands, or subway stations if you plan to take them. This will allow you to cut down transportation costs and make traveling to and from your assigned hotel much more convenient.

Consider your personal taste.

There are many types of housing that you may stumble upon. It could be a loft-type condominium or studio-type apartment unit, so choose what you think will best fit you and your lifestyle. With that, also consider the amenities that come with your housing. You can find places with a pool, gym, or even a convenience store, whatever suits your taste.

Housing Listings Guide For J-1 Interns And Trainees - Look for a roommate

Look for a roommate.

Luckily for you, you have fellow interns and trainees that will also fly to the US. You will have a chance to talk and get to know them before the program starts, so look for other interns you may want to have as a roommate.

Having a roommate can reduce costs as you will be sharing rent, utilities, and other household expenses with someone else.

You’ll also be able to spend your stay with a friend, so most definitely you won’t feel alone in your new environment.

No matter how or where you look for house listings, secure your housing before you leave the country.

This is to ensure that when you arrive in the US, you will have a place to stay for the entire program duration.

If you can’t find any house listings that you want, reach out to us! Remember that your safety should always be a priority, so we’ll be more than happy to help.
